A Man, A Chicken, A Can of Beer and a Dream

Our story begins on a spring day in March in the midst of the Atchafalaya Basin deep in the heart of Cajun country. Ray Guidry was attending the annual Wild Rabbit Cook-Off with little interest in the competition. His main reason instead was to relax, drink a few beers with friends and more than anything, listen to his two daughters that were performing in the band providing musical entertainment to both competitor and onlooker alike.

Ray, a Cajun cooking enthusiast at heart, walked around the many different teams, all preparing various dishes using wild rabbit. It wasn't the many different ways that he saw the rabbits being prepared that caught his eye, but what he saw being done to a chicken that got most of his attention. Some of the spectators were attempting to cook a chicken in a way very few people had ever seen before.

The process involved seasoning a whole chicken, placing it upright with an open can of beer in its belly, and cooking it on the barbeque pit. He watched in amusement as these Cajun chefs struggled with this wobbly chicken trying to keep it from flipping on its side and spilling the contents into the flames. A few days later Ray, with the tipsy chicken still on his mind, saw two pieces of scrap aluminum on the floor of his shop and a light bulb came on. Using his skills as a welder, he crafted a stand with a base for stability and an open pipe as a cup to hold the beer.

You see, Ray knew that the concept had merit but what was needed was perfecting the tool. He experimented with different size pipes. He tried various liquids in the cup, different size plates. He even bought and prepared different size chickens.

Well, persistence paid off in this case, Ray succeeded in creating the Cajun Tipsy Chicken Cooker a device that allowed even the most novice of bar-b-quer's to create tender, well-cooked birds, each with its own distinct flavor. Word of mouth about a good thing travels fast along the bayous, and Ray was soon making these cookers for family and friends. Not wanting to keep a good thing to himself, Ray applied for and received a patent, and began manufacturing and selling these cookers.
